On Friday, October 10, 2007, Attorney General Bill McCollum co-hosted a community Shred-a-Thon with Turnberry Bank as part of an ongoing effort to combat identity theft. The event took place at Turnberry Bank's Aventura headquarters. Community leaders, including Aventura's mayor, Susan Gottlieb, and local law enforcement officials spoke about the perils of identity theft and gave tips on how to combat it. A mobile shredding unit was on site for people to shred their documents, such as old bank or credit card statements, receipts, check stubs, old bills and other outdated personal documents. Turnberry Bank's president, Joseph Guerra, announced that the bank and the city of Aventura are partnering to host additional events like the Shred-A-Thon to help bring awareness to the growing threat of identity theft and the importance of protecting yourself through activities such as shredding documents containing personal information.
